Course Overview
Women are entitled to the same fundamental human rights and freedoms as all individuals, as mandated by international human rights treaties. These treaties require that nations take proactive measures to uphold women's human rights under the law and to eradicate discrimination, inequalities, and practices that adversely affect women's rights. Furthermore, international human rights law may grant women specific additional rights, particularly in the realm of reproductive healthcare.
Women and girls often find themselves assuming increased caregiving responsibilities within their households, subjecting them to additional stress and potentially elevating their vulnerability to infections. Globally, women constitute 70% of healthcare workers, including midwives, nurses, pharmacists, and community health personnel at the forefront of the battle against health crises, thereby increasing their exposure and risk of infection. It is imperative to implement targeted measures to address the disproportionate impact of such crises on women and girls.
It is vital to recognize that the rights of women and girls are an integral part of human rights, encompassing various facets of life such as health, education, political engagement, economic well-being, and protection from violence, among numerous others. Women and girls have an inherent right to enjoy all their human rights fully and equally, and they should be free from all forms of discrimination. This principle is fundamental in achieving human rights, fostering peace and security, and advancing sustainable development.
The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action affirm that safeguarding and advancing human rights are foremost responsibilities of governments and are at the core of the United Nations' mission. The Platform for Action firmly embeds the pursuit of gender equality within a human rights framework and emphasizes the role of states in fulfilling their commitments.
The United Nations Charter guarantees equal rights for both women and men, while major international human rights agreements explicitly call for the elimination of sex-based discrimination. Nearly all countries have ratified the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), often referred to as the international bill of rights for women.
However, significant gaps and violations persist in every region of the world today, and progress has been regrettably slow, particularly for the most marginalized women and girls. Discriminatory legal practices persist in many nations. Women still face overt bias in labor markets and encounter obstacles in accessing economic resources. Various forms of violence specifically targeted at women and girls deprive them of their rights and, all too often, their lives. In certain regions, maternal mortality remains unacceptably high. The burdens of unpaid caregiving work continue to curtail women's ability to fully exercise their rights.
